Short version: Zingo's and Dewar's for the win.

Long version: Went shopping Friday in Vernon, didn't find any suitable toys. I'm trying to find a small thank-you present I can give to the staff at next year's Animé Los Angeles.

Went to UCLA, saw Jane Fonda speak and Caitlin Doolittle walk and get her Masters in Fine Arts. Straggled home, loaded car, drove to Lancaster, picked up Paige Willey about midnight. Drove up through Mojave, just after Tehachapi my fuel light came on. Rode on fumes to Gen. Beale Rd., filled tank, drove 58 to 99, went the wrong way, came back up and eventually found the Bakersfield Residence Inn about 2 am. Made a big bucket of iced tea, went to bed.

Got up, bought ice and lemonade concentrate, got to park about 10 am. Bucket of iced tea was half empty and my floor was soggy. Arggh. We were the first two people to arrive. Picnic start time was announced for 12:00. Third person arrived at 12:30 and she wasn't one of the organizers. (Hi, Leane/Homura!) Organizers arrived a little after 1:00. Some local fans had organized a "Bakersfield Anime Picnic" so I was there to help support.

I brought lemonade, iced tea and water; someone else brought some more water. No other drinks. The 5 gallons of lemonade was all consumed. Homemade macaroni salad, homemade salad, homemade cupcakes. Storebought cookies, many chips, home-prepared chicken wings to barbecue, big fat hot dogs. Nobody went hungry or thirsty. Everyone seemed to have a good time.

A couple of people asked if Paige was my daughter. No. She told a number of fans about Fandomverse Expo. Favorite question, from three different people: "What's Palmdale?" (I've often wondered that myself.)

After, went to dinner at Zingo's Cafe (24-hr. cafe est. 1964) at 3201 Buck Owens Blvd., Bakersfield CA, (661) 321-0627. Delicious deep pit beef sandwich, onion rings, veg beef soup, meatloaf, cornbread, lemon cream pie... Then ice cream sundaes at Dewar's Soda Fountain/Eye Street Creamery (est. 1909), 1120 Eye St., Bakersfield CA 93304, (661) 322-0933.

Then we got up Sunday morning, drove back to Lancaster, had lunch at Crazy Otto's (Ave. K/20th St. West, in Lancaster) and grabbed a chocolate old-fashioned doughnut at Donuts Plus Donuts And Muffins (Ave K./Challenger Way). A few hours more driving and I'm home.
