Christian's Moving Day (02-Jun-2007). He's moving into the spare room at Elayne's house. Click on the picture of

Last Saturday we were invited to help Christian move. This was a moving day, not a packing day -- the truck would be rented, the furniture would go from Joan's house to Elayne's house.
I was required -- a few weeks before, Christian had moved a huge (8' wide, 6' high) red bookcases from Elayne's house in Granada Hills, via surface streets and several hours, to my parents' home in Costa Mesa. San Fernando Mission Road, San Fernando Road down to Spring Street, Olympic to Atlantic, Telegraph Road down to Imperial Hwy, then Harbor Blvd almost the complete length (height?) of Orange County, through La Habra, Fullerton, Anaheim, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana. That was a long night. So I owed him.
Lynn and I didn't get an early enough start, and we got stuck in traffic, so we ended up arriving about noon. Almost all of the unloading had finished -- I got to help carry in a mirror from Tadao's car. But there was more work to be done. Fortunately a lot of people had shown up to help -- Tadao, Joyce and Hoop, Liz and Ed, Sherri and Tony, and even Stacey and Brett were there. We got the furniture in place, and then Christian and Tadao went off to return the truck.
They were gone a real long time.
We got bored.
There were twenty or more medium white boxes, all packed with books. And a whole bunch of empty bookcases. Wouldn't it be helpful if we got all of those books out of the boxes and put them on the shelves? Any old order, just get them unpacked so there's more room to walk around in there.
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.
There were a few white boxes marked "Do not open" (actually, they just said "M" which we assume stood for "Mine") but all of the other white boxes had books. Except one that had a towel on top and seemed to be bathroom stuff. When we got through all the white boxes, we took a look at one random box that said "PB's" on it -- it turned out not to contain paperbacks. So we didn't open up any other random boxes, and satisfied ourselves with having completed the bulk of the books.
We didn't know that the shed was full of Christian's paperbacks... oh well, they're out of the way and can be unpacked later. And we knew we didn't want to open the rest of Christian's boxes. Let him deal with that on his own time.
We also decided the great big leatherbound bible belonged on the bottom shelf of his nightstand. We even hooked up his lamps for him.
When he got back and saw the empty boxes piled next to the garage he almost had a heart attack. When he learned that we had only unpacked books, he was still stunned. Speechless.
He and I spent five or ten minutes talking about what we (the whole gang left behind at the house, except Elayne) had done, and his reactions to our constructive progress.
After that excitement, people were hanging out in Elayne's house but it didn't seem to be the prelude to any more festivities there, so we hit the road and headed out to dinner and home.

Date: 2007-06-08 09:57 pm (UTC)I just got my Nippon 2007 update and LOVED the sticker book idea. I'd like to try to do it. I was hoping you'd remember about how many ribbons people ordered for laconiv. That could give me a ballpark figure for how many stickers to bring. What do you think?
