We're selling Maria's
inter_action membership on Ebay... Minimum bid $100. There's a day left to bid on it, if you want it.
EDIT: It didn't sell at $100 minimum, so we listed it again http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6548277757 with a minimum bid of $50. It's up to $56 as of 25-Jul-2005; the auction ends late Monday night. $56 US is about 32 pounds, if you were thinking of bidding on it from the other side of the pond...
We've heard from Maria, by the way; there's been an avalanche that cut off some roads, so they've been stuck in a small town in the middle of nowhere. But she's doing fine.
E-mail to bostonbaden.com is flowing again, and it's all piling up in my "hazelchaz" Gmail account. Including e-mail for
library_lynn -- one or two things that aren't going to her earthlink accont ("lvbaden") are going there.
More later...

Server meltdown
Date: 2005-07-22 03:29 am (UTC)Re: Server meltdown
Date: 2005-07-22 11:39 am (UTC)1. Does the drive make audible noises it normally wouldnt? i.e. clicking, grinding, rattling
2. Does the drive run overly warm?
3. Does the drive still show up in the IDE/SATA/SCSI device enumeration on bootup?
4. Is a drive letter for the drive visible when the OS is running?
5. Will the drive work for an inital period of time and then start erroring out?
If its making audible noises....thats crossing the streams bad
If the drive is running too hot to touch then it needs airflow over it (7200rpm drives can get away without airflow but anything higher and airflow is required! Also, if its 7200rpm drive and you cant touch it without getting burned you need to give it airflow)
If the device wont enumerate in the BIOS bootup try having the hard drive be the only device on the chain and see if it will show up then
If the drive will still show up as a drive letter but you cant look at it, etc in a running OS then it may be possible for me to recover its contents using my forensics tools
If the drive works for a short period of time and then starts erroring out there is a good chance this is a heat related failure. In these cases you want to put the hard drive into your freezer for a few hours in a sealed ziplock bag along with a small bag or two of silica dessicant.
If the device wont show up at all, no matter what, your only option of getting all the data recovered is DriveSavers. http://www.drivesavers.com/
DriveSavers will cost somewhere between 1400-2700 to recover the drive but that is just a guess, you have to talk to them to get a quote to see what it would be for sure. The guys at DriveSavers do some rather crazy things to bring data back to life like working in a clean room environment and swapping the platters from an old disk into a new drive mechanism and new controller among many other tricks they have up their sleeves that I havent had the equipment or time to learn myself.
Here is an example of what these guys can do (from their site) http://www.drivesavers.com/museum/iToastBig.mov (Don't click if you are on dialup)
