dd_b tells me that it looks a little bit more like a disk drive failure, rather than a break-in. And, some of the directories that went "Poof" might be recoverable -- I'm crossing my fingers for /hazel/Pix/ to be recovered that way.
He also told me about the packages that dreamhost.com has ... might be worth looking into, after this is all over.
