As you may have heard if you read dd_b's LJ, or if you've noticed the lack of my photos here in my LJ... the server's been hacked. Boston-baden.com is down until further notice. Uncertain how many of my recent (this year, last year) photos will be back when we recover.

This also means you can't reach me via e-mail, of course. But I'll check in here from time to time...

Actually, we're not convinced it was a hack -- might have been a random drive meltdown. The results are rather random... the lasfs.org, loscon.org, and animelosangeles.org web pages seem to be unaffected, except the Forums for animelosangeles.org went kkaput. For example.

Right now the server's offline, of course... thank goodness that none of the conventions affected (incl. Minicon) are coming right up on top of us. I'd be worried if we were hosting, say, Nasfic or Interaction...

Re: backups, well.... there's a backup from May of the text files, but for the photos there MIGHT be a way to recover raw data from the dead drive, plus we have backups from 1999-2002. Not the greatest of prognoses, but it could be a lot worse. DD-B was in the process of setting up a new uber-backup system, so it's all the more heartbreaking to have it happen before that was ready to save our butts.

The lesson, though, is that backups are good; with the new computer I have, I intend to backup my pictures before or concurrent with when they're uploaded, in addition to any potential server-backup systems that will be in place down the line.

(The new laptop has cd-rom burning capability, which the last one didn't.)

Oh, and I'd love to make it to Conestoga, but not this year I'm afraid. Neither will I make it to Demicon. Next stops are inter_action, CascadiaCon, Akibiyori (picnic), Ani-Magic, Conjecture, Yaoi-Con, and Loscon. Also I'm still hoping to make it to Smofcon, and I might show up at Philcon. That's it for the rest of this year...

Mrrrrrrrrrrrrr... Condolences and warm fuzzies. Hopefully, you'll get things back in running order soon but, either way, the work of getting things back into shape is going to be a mighty pain in the... You do one h*ll of an incredible job there and, I suspect, we'll be more aware of how much we all value it when it's not available than we have been when it has been available and we've taken it for granted. (Yeah. I know that's pretty convoluted but I can't think of a cleaner way to say it so I leave it to you to untangle the previous sentence.)
