We have something in common: we share a hobby. It's a hobby that we spend time and money on. We pay for hotel rooms and memberships (badges) and transportation costs, we take time off from our regular day-to-day lives, we do all this to make something happen for a brief shining weekend.

Our hobby is convention-running. Oh, we may have common interests or fandoms, but that's not a requirement. You don't need to read science fiction to help issue badges at a science fiction convention; you don't need to know a Doctor from a Dalek to volunteer to help with line control at a Doctor Who convention; you don't need to know what AMV stands for, to be an usher at an AMV contest. And so on, for the myriad things that need to happen for the event to go smoothly, or go at all.

And we do all this because this is our hobby. One of our hobbies, the one we all have in common. We don't do it for the handful of perks we might get, such as a discount on our hotel room, or a t-shirt, or some free meals. We certainly don't do it for the thanks we get: there's not enough gratitude for all that we do. We find our own reasons, to do what needs to be done.

And I think the most common reason is because this is our hobby.

First draft of a new entry for my personal Bingo Card. But that's another story.
