I talked to somebody over Baycon/FanimeCon weekend about ribbons. I was handing out ribbons that said Fan Boy, Fan Girl, Cheesecake, Sunnydale Visitors Bureau, and so forth. I also handed off some to other people to hand out, for example Kevin & Andy handed out the Gender Outlaw ribbons, and I let the Internet Lounge people hand out Friends of Tux. (Credit goes to "Rain" of ConFusion [the one in Michigan] for the Gender Outlaw ribbon idea.) It's more fun when I can have other people hand out ribbons, although of course it does get a little expensive. (The ribbons can cost up to 35 cents each to order.)

And I told this person -- whose name I've forgotten, and which I didn't write down in my little notebook -- that I'd be putting in another ribbon order soon, and I'd be happy to let them piggyback off my order.

Who was that person? Was it you?

Does it make a difference whether or not they are considered "camera-ready"?

I am trying to decide if I really need two different kinds of ribbon. Leaning against getting just one variety (although making a few of them a different color makes it slightly tempting).

I am leaning towards Design #1 -- will they be able to do Comic Sans? If they can do it without "camera-ready art" with a different sans-serif font, then I think I'd rather have that many (how many?) more ribbons than have Comic Sans.

What does the ribbon company consider to be "emerald green"? %-} Do they have a color sampler online? Will the metallic green print show up well enough on it?

P.S.: Got my "Silly Ribbon" ribbon, as did my friend, with your assistance. ;-D Actually, zahraa didn't want the one I'd gotten for her, so I may save it for BayCon or LosCon.

You've given me enough money for 100 ribbons with a camera-ready original such as the samples I've shown above.

If you give me a mailing address, I can mail you samples to show you the colors. I have a ribbon with green foil and ribbons in various shades of green.

I'll ask them if they have a sans-serif font; if they set it, it'll be two rows, i.e. it'll look more like design #3. The difference between them setting a two-row ribbon and using our camera ready art is the cost of approximately 32 ribbons.

They have one big sans-serif typeface for hand-setting ribbons, it's 36 point, probably Helvetica or Helvetica Bold. You could print "ERIC" or "ELEVATOR" but not both, and not two lines.

But in other late-breaking news, they just now offered me free setup on three ribbons. So I submitted Design #1 and two other ribbon ideas -- you're off the hook for that setup charge. Which means that you can get 150 ribbons, and you can still split the order over different ribbon colors.

They offered me three free setups; I "spent" them on the ribbons that three of my friends had requested and were ready to move forward on.

About the quantities and colors involved: I'd recommend forest green and gold for one of the styles, and emerald with green printing for the other. Looking at the samples I have here, I think that would come off looking truly spiffy.

If you're willing to trust me on this, it merely remains to decide how to break down the 150 ribbons. Do you want to wear the green-on-green (i.e. cast/crew) or do you want as many people as possile to have green-on-green (i.e. guests)?

I do, in fact, trust you; nonetheless, I am very persnickety about shades of green: I don't like them too dark, too drab, or too "army". %-} I'd like to see the samples, if I could.

I figure I'd do 25 of the "cast & crew" color, and 125 of the "guests & fans" color. Whatever those turn out to be. I'm more likely, I think, to make the larger proportion the green-on-green -- assuming that the combo is actually readable.

My little packet of green samples goes out in today's mail.

I was actually thinking of making the smaller number be the green-on-green, as a hedge against the combination not working out. But you can decide when you see them.

Smaller number be green-on-green: ooh, actually, I think that's a good idea, for two reasons.

1. The green-on-green is special, and for me (okay, and the rest of the cast/crew types).
2. If the combination doesn't work, I can always wear 1 of each ribbon, for greater legibility. :-D
