So, what have I been doing since Anime Expo? Well, right now I'm putting the Fan Gallery into order, so it can be taken to
denvention3. And we're in high season as far as convention postcards are concerned -- the
animelosangeles postcards have been mailed,
loscon has their postcards, and the Gallifrey One postcards (
doctorwho convention) are due here from the printers any day. And then in the next a month or two we've got another round for all three conventions, and possibly a Westercon too.
library_lynn and I have also airing out a bunch of boxes of stuff -- some of them are a bit smelly, but that's usually due to one or two pieces in the box having a bit too much cat-smell on 'em. We're taking everything out of the suspect boxes, "one piece at a time," hence the Johnny Cash lyric today.
As we go, we're boxing stuff up that smells okay to put in the big wooden shed, and setting aside the few pieces to be washed or quarantined. We've got a small (18 cu. ft.) plastic storage shed (Rubbermaid stock #3753), and if it doesn't look like we can deal with the item it goes in there. Handy tip: don't open it up if you're allergic. We're down to the last half-dozen boxes, so it's going really well. (I'm hoping to have a meeting here at my house next month, and there are other reasons for wanting all of this stuff off our front porch and back patio...)
At work, that project that's sent me to Indianapolis and San Luis Obispo (and even San Francisco recently) is coming to a head. The interesting thing about it is that most of my professional career has involved cross-platform development and maintenance -- this means that the computer I'm writing the software or firmware on isn't the one that will actually execute the program. (Just as the people who develop the firmware for your DVD player don't do it on a DVD player that's got a keyboard and disk drive on it -- they use a real computer, and download the firmware onto the unit.) Anyhow, this is the first time in about 20 years that I've been able to write code and compile & test it on the same computer. Well, on something I'm getting paid for, that is. I write programs and tools for Hazel's Picture Gallery and other stuff on my server all the time.
It looks like I'll be going back out to Indy before it's done, and I'll probably go along to the big Atlanta trade show in September. It's right before something at CSU Northridge I want to attend, that happens to be on the same weekend as Anime Weekend Atlanta. I wish I could stay over! Trade shows typically run Tue-Wed-Thu, but my prior commitment in SoCal means I can't stick around. Missed opportunities...
In conventions that I will be attending, I've got three coming up in August, all very different. This coming weekend is Costume College at the Airtel Plaza Hotel. Stop by and say hi if you're around -- I'll be in the Costume Exhibit room all day (in or near room 186) and you don't need a badge to visit that or go to the dealers room. Parking's free, too.
Then the following weekend there's a potluck cosplay picnic I'm organizing in Irvine at Mason Regional Park, while everyone else is off at Worldcon; and the next weekend is Tiki Oasis. After that, on the weekend before my birthday I've got some
animelosangeles meetings planned, and finally on Labor Day weekend I'll be at Anime Vegas.
Busy busy busy. Haven't done much work lately on the
costume_con photos -- I'm hoping that I can dump all of them in place shortly and come back to the captioning later. I've set that as the project to get past before I upload more of my own photos to my own website, which is why you haven't seen any Hazel's Picture Gallery updates here.
In other news,
missmea is still in North Carolina, having adventures. She'll be back sometime this summer. Probably spend some time sleeping on the couch here -- her old room's not available, and she has no apartment anymore. She doesn't like Orange County, though, so she'll be powerfully motivated to find a job and a place.
Oh and for those of you who follow the anime convention circuit, some odd news: Ani-Magic is renaming themselves to Autumn Dream. They're in October, at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, two days (Sat-Sun). I haven't figured out if they've entirely abandoned their old name. (I haven't seen any of their flyers yet. Have you? If they have dropped the old name entirely, it means that last year was the last Ani-Magic.) Autumn Dream falls between
yaoicon in September, and
pmx in November. I've got a couple of people going with me to Y-con, and a good-sized group going to PMX; I could use another person to represent us at Autumn Dream.
Have you looked at animecons.com? Would you believe, of all of the anime conventions I've mentioned,
animelosangeles is the smallest one that reports their attendance? (Based on the 12 months of Aug. 2007-July 2008.) Or, to put it another way, AX and Anime Vegas are the only others that reported (to animecons.com) how many people they got... I really don't know what conclusion to draw from that.
On the ribbon front, I'm probably done with accepting orders from people who don't read my ribbons mailing list or even my Ribbon Resources page. Grrr. Argghh. At least the last person to ask "Is it too late for ribbons for Denvention" was a week ago. If you'd read the mailing list you'd know when the orders go in... Incidentally, if you're running a convention, I've got some "stock ribbons" I'd like to send your way. I'll cut you a deal. I want to use up the ones I have, so I can change color schemes when I reprint them.
And are the Tulsa fans crazy? Conestoga, the annual sci-fi convention, just a week before their new "Tokyo in Tulsa" convention? Ease up, you guys, put a bit of a gap in there! And good luck, wish I could see y'all this summer.
EDIT: Oh yeah, there was an earthquake with epicenter just 5 miles from Lynn's library. It was just in the 5's, though... wake me up when you've got a 6 or a 7 richter for us.

Oh, and we've got room. Want to sleep over with me?

Anyway, if you're having a party, I'll definitely try to make it. Thing is, Sunday is a big holiday (Michaelmas) and I have commitments for much of the day. And maybe I work on Saturday, if I'm still working.
I only live about uh, 10 minutes away from the Marriott, or about 14 minutes by train.
