Website Recovery Fund stands at $585, including a can full of cash collected at LASFS. Thanks to Allan, Lucy, Menolly, Pat, Selina, and Zara and the crowd at the LASFS meeting on Thursday for the contributions and support. Also, thanks to everyone who's sent me my photos back. And I think I found a copy of my Noreascon 4 pictures on library_lynn's laptop. (I took lots of pictures in 2004, but the biggest batch was at the Worldcon.)

A number of suggestions have come in -- some contradicting each other, I might add -- on the best way to proceed with dd_b's dead disk drive, short of spending a kilobuck on an all-purpose data recovery service. Most interesting I think is Shawn's proposal to use a program that's specifically designed to rescue photos off of dead disk drives or other media. And thanks to johno for reminding me that the EXIF data block created by the digital camera will tell me everything I need to know about when a JPEG file was created -- so even if we have no identifying data whatsoever from a clobbered directory, if we can successfully recover the JPEG file it can tell us where it belongs.

If we end up saving money by using some of these tools and get back all of my photos, the money left in the fund will be put towards the hosting fees at Dreamhost. They charge about $20/month, so I'll be able to prepay two years or so.
