ConDor Report part 1.
(See also
part 2.)
I got to the hotel Friday about 8:00 pm.
Registration was long closed.
Regency Dance was
slowly getting started. I hear they had up to four
couples dancing. James Hay was dancemaster for the evening. (right)
Jerry Shaw was at the convention, with his spiffy big-capacitance flash unit. He
can take four flash pictures in a row, flash-flash-flash-flash. I'm trying
to
learn the limitations of my flashless options on my cameras, myself. (left)
The Ice Cream/Cake social was both going on. There was still plenty. I didn't grab
any, because it's difficult to shoot and eat at the same time, and I needed to get
the car unloaded. Plus, I hadn't had dinner yet.
(right)
I ran into
ericeps. He told me about the "Muggle
Studies"
panel, which was due to run from 9:00 to 10:00 pm. It was a "Liars' Panel" --
they'd show some obscure Muggle artifact, and the five panelists would each
describe an implausible use. One of them would actually be telling the truth.
He auditioned and was declared "a natural liar," so he invited me to stop by and
see it.
(left)
The previous item had run late, so the Muggle Artifacts started late.
It ended on time -- an abbreviated program item -- to allow the combo coming
up after to sing their songs about sneaking around at Hogwarts and such.
(right)
On the off chance they might still be open, I drove across to Sombrero Mexican Food.
And they were open! I got myself dinner, a chorizo
burrito. I had four of
them over the course of the weekend. Interestingly enough, they're cheaper when
you buy them during breakfast hours. And I recently learned that their website has
some valuable coupons, so next time I head to San Diego I should print them out
first.
I had a bankers box full of books (which I mentioned in my
last post) that I put
out on the book swap table
Friday night. Saturday,
caprine
asked Richard James to help put out four or more bankers boxes from the
book swap collection, so mine ended up mixed in with the rest of the books. (Which
is what I wanted.)
Allison had many panels all day, so Richard ended up doing most of the
fussing. (left)
By the time I went home on Sunday, the table was no longer carpeted
completely with books, and the few boxes left on the table were almost empty.
I could see a few of the books I had brought were still waiting for takers,
but I was pleased with the results. (right)
David Okamura was there, representing the Southern California Paper Modelers
Conspiracy. Note the "R'LH" sticker on the laptop. (left)
Colleen Kelly Burks had ordered a bunch of ribbons for the convention. A large
number -- if you didn't end up with at least three ribbons, you were below
average. Here she has a string of 11. I recognized all of them, including the
STRAIGHT but not narrow ribbon that
glittercat13 had a stash of.
But how did she end up with a WHEN IN ROME... ribbon? Joyce
Hooper and
nitroace weren't at ConDor. (right)
Colleen also has a ConDor "passport" with spaces to accumulate "visa stamps." I
had my pawprint signature stamp with me, so I ended up stamping a few books
myself.
I saw Peggy Wu, hanging off of Bill's ear.
Peggy and Bill were some of the few L.A./O.C. people that made it to ConDor. I was
surprised by how many people I was expecting to see who weren't there.
(left)
I did see some of the Linker girls, including Shannah Linker (right)
and
loscon representatives Marcia and
Casey.
lyzard13 was there, but no
edgreen86.
Belle and Thomas were there,
galtine1 but not
jbriggs.
bardsworth sold me a chocolate chip cookie
pillow. His wife's dressed up as a fairy. (left)
On Sunday,
Katharine Tarkulich was wearing a different fairy outfit.
I think one of them is
incredibly
supportive of the other's hobby, but I can't figure out which... or maybe the two
of them are just perfectly matched, like
colleency
obishawn
I could mention. (right)
And I learned about Spoonflower
for custom print fabric, which was very interesting information to receive indeed.
galtine1 has lost 50 lbs., she tells me, and is
therefore a little less camera-shy now. She was sitting at Bearwoman's jewelry
table's table.
There was a lounging area in the middle of the dealers room.
The dealers room had perhaps half as
many tables as last year, so they had a lot of free space to fill. There were some toys to paly
play with in the center, and about four comfy chairs. (right)
I said hi to Sue Dawe, of course. And at the Star Wars Rebel Legion fan
table, Donna Keeley had a
spiffy "SAVE THE PRINCESS - SAVE THE GALAXY" t-shirt. (left)
Masquerade had a number of steampunk entries. (right)
One of the more notable groups had a bunch of "steam effects" which were very
impressive. Take my word for it, as I didn't manage to capture the "steam" in any
of my pictures.
(left)
Elanore Hall was there, dressed as "Belldandy."
(right)
I would have given her an
animelosangeles postcard if I had
any.
Need to reprint them! I need to reprint them real soon now, actually -- the ten
thousand I ordered in December are gone, mostly into reg bags or in the mail to
individual members and past members.
Next: Party time, and a park for a picnic.
