Did anyone leave some kind of crocheted baby dress (or something) in our car during [livejournal.com profile] animelosangeles? [livejournal.com profile] library_lynn and I can't figure out where it came from...

Gallifrey 2009: Pre-convention Meeting (08-Feb-2009) New 10-Feb-2009

As you can see, I've been posting a lot of flotsam and miscellaneous short batches... The picture of [livejournal.com profile] friendlypinet is from the committee meeting last weekend for the [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho convention Gallifrey One next weekend.

Trying to catch up with November. We went to [livejournal.com profile] loscon. Here's part 1 of my Loscon 35 report. (Other sections: part 2, part 3.)

Scalzi - Bacon - Cats - YUM! You don't have to have been paying attention that much to know that "we" means myself, [livejournal.com profile] library_lynn and [livejournal.com profile] missmea. Not counting [livejournal.com profile] animelosangeles, Loscon is our "home convention." If we only go to one convention a year, it'll be Loscon. Some people can't go to Loscon because it's on a big family-holiday weekend and they've got family they need to be with; some people like going to Loscon because it lets them get away from the family they don't want to spend the whole weekend with; some people (like myself) bring their families; and for some people, the "family" they care about are their large circle of friends who also make Loscon their home convention.

While I've been to five Animé Los Angeles conventions, and nine or ten Worldcons, and an assortment of others, Loscon is the one I've been attending consistently the longest.

From the profound to the absurd I used to be a productive staff person at Loscon, a department head running something or other. Lately, I've just been coasting -- I'm an ordinary member, and some years I'll pull enough of my weight to get a pass-on to the next year. Of course, this year I had a ready excuse: I was representing Animé Los Angeles.

Cathy Beckstead and Joyce Hooper, chairs of the convention. Photo taken in the Fanzine Lounge/Costume Repair Station room. The co-chairs ([livejournal.com profile] nitroace and Joyce Hooper, left) and I had worked out an arrangement where we would "sponsor" an anime-related track of programs at Loscon, we'd print up postcards publicizing this and mail them to everyone on the Animé Los Angeles mailing list offering them a discount, and we'd have a Miyazaki movie (Spirited Away) showing in the main ballroom; Saturday was already going to have the Masquerade, and Karaoke after the Masquerade, and I'd host a party Saturday night as well.

Romans go home The theme for LosCon 35 was A funny thing happened on the way to the LosCon... which meant that anything Roman was fair game. About a month before the convention, Joyce was wondering if anyone was going to come to the convention and whether the whole thing was going to work. I assured her that lots of people were planning to attend and have a good item, and I could see that because of all of the ribbons different people wanted in time for Loscon.

Whatever (Scalzi's blog) See, badge ribbons have, um, sort of exploded, as far as Loscon is concerned. And with John Scalzi as the Writer Guest of Honor, who is perhaps most famous on the internet for having once taped bacon on his cat (and posted it on his "Whatever" blog), people were already prepared to have a good time.

(Latin translations: "From the profound to the absurd" and "Romans go home." The latter is from Monty Python's Life of Brian. The People's Front of Judea took responsibility for painting that a hundred times overnight on the walls of the Roman fort. Things did not go well for Brian after that.)

To be continued. Next: More about badge ribbons.

I got married the Saturday after Thanksgiving, years before Loscon made that their weekend. Now we celebrate our Anniversary at Loscon. We got family at Loscon. Yeah, that will work. :D

Technically, the translation of "De Profundis ad Absurdum" should be "From the depths to the absurd." Which makes the translation of the LASFS motto "From the depths to the stars."
