Erik V. Olson asked, "You've got a great little bit on what needs to be on a con flyer. Could you provide?"

Well, the flyer mnemonic he's asking for goes more or less like this: dates, rates, places, faces, 'tag, 'bag, what & web.

Dates, rates, places, faces -- those meanings should be obvious. The dates of your convention, the cost to register, the venue(s), the guests of honor.

'tag and 'bag refers to nametag and mailbag -- what's the name of the convention (it's usually printed on your nametag, your badge) and what's the mailing address.

What and web -- what kind of a convention is it? Lots of sci-fi conventions leave this out. Even an anime convention that has the word anime in the name ought to include the word convention (or equivalent) on the flyer, if it's not part of the name e.g. Anime Expo. I'm guilty of leaving that out myself sometimes... I better check my working draft for the next postcard... and web, of course, refers to your web page domain.

And in other news, Lynn, Christian and I got back this afternoon from Ani-Magic in Lancaster, California. Trivium of the day: while Lancaster, Pennsylvania is named after the British place, the city in California is named after the one in Pennsylvania. )

Reports are circulating on cosplay.com under the topic thread "Last Day Of Animagic?" that this was the last Ani-Magic. Did anyone videotape the closing ceremonies? The Ani-Magic website hasn't been updated to show any news about this.

Christophe's post: There was an announcement at closing... that the autumn dream cannot continue. And that they need donations to help them for the expenses of even this year's event. There was much sadness about this, and the many people who were here during the announcement expressed their concern and support and interest in doing whatever it took to allow it to continue. I heard rumors that there may be hope, but nothing solid... I guess we shall see if there is any news in the days and weeks ahead. I thought this year went very well - so many people were having an incredibly good time... I really do not want to see this con go, as its been very enjoyable for me from the very first year. I'm still onsite now, looking for answers, still hopeful.

People run conventions for different reasons, for different goals; what I think some of them lose sight of are the different reasons people come to the conventions they run. And possibly this blind spot is the root cause of Ani-Magic's situation, although I fear they'll never understand it.

I'm starting to lose my train of thought, i've been composing this post for about two hours and I want to go to bed. But one closing thought: what do you expect to find in a program book, as a minimum? (Assume we're talking about program book+pocket program; how the info is distributed across them is not as important as it being in there somewhere.) And what else would you expect at a well-run convention?

There was an update on cosplay.com:

Statement Regarding Ani-Magic
Hello All:
This statement will hopefully clear the air about the status of Ani-Magic. Ani-Magic will return in 2008. How we were spared exactly is known only to those we trust and love in the community. In order to avoid the resultant flames that may accompany this, neither I or any member of the staff and executive board will comment further on this board. If you want to talk to us, you know where to find us. If you have suggestions to make Ani-Magic better, and there are some good ideas here, feel free to e-mail me or Jack. Our sincere thanks to all of you who have wished us well and given us your support, now,in the past' and in the future. And for those of you who for any reason feel that I or the staff have slighted you over the years, accept our sincere apology. We're just trying to make dreams happen.

Uh-huh. So it's not vanishing, but they're not going to talk about the details publicly. Well, I have a few simple suggestions that can probably be boiled down to one word: transparency. To continue my comments from my last post: If all you care about is access control, then sure, color-coded polo shirts for the staff and badges for the unwashed paying attendees works. But a convention should be about community, a word Revell used above. To foster that, I believe everyone should wear their nametags, including the senior staff.

They should print their committee list in their program book -- not just the top three people, the people actually running departments -- and they should have an Information Desk. The people running Information should have most of the answers and be able to get the rest of them, and should be active on the various online forums before the convention.

As an example, here's a copy of the Ani-Magic Forum: Window Display Contest topic as of today (PDF). There are queries from Yana Neko, Inuashley, and Kagato AMV over a one-week period ending with the first day of the con. No answers, though. Yana Neko mentioned on a followup on my previous post that even though they knew they were being given the award, they didn't know when to show up to receive the prize.

Can they reorganize themselves so that there are lines of communication that work, and staff members know what's going on and can respond to this sort of inquiry?
